Overview
The Comet SCSI 16J represents the highest performance standard made
available through Caen's sophisticated RAID technologies. Boasting
a high-performance XOR engine and the complete firmware functionality,
the Comet SCSI 16J is ideal for mass scale storage using SCSI drives.
The series enclosures come with redundant, load-sharing power supplies,
and multiple cooling fans. Critical modules are hot-replaceable.
Adding to an array's availability and manageability, the series
is provided with the most flexible options with system monitoring.
System managers can rectify and be alerted of a system event locally
through fault indicators, remotely through GUI icons in the RAIDWatch
manager, the array-independent Event Monitor, via email, SNMP traps
or LAN broadcast by NPC (Notification Processing Center).
Architecture
The subsystem series is specialized for flexible resource utilization
to manage various-size IOs, random, or sequential access that requires
high-speed throughput. A range of 4 to 256KB array stripe-size and
optimization parameters are adjustable on a per logical drive basis.
With the help of a dedicated XOR and an L2-enabled CPU, IOs are
rapidly distributed between host and drives.
The RAID controllers in the subsystem come in the 4 or 6-channel
version. The system using the 6-channel controllers allows cascading
with a JBOD to scale capacity.
Firmware Capabilities
Designed for the heterogeneous and multi-host environments, the
system supports up to 128 logical drives, 32 logical volumes, and
each of the logical drives can be partitioned into 64 storage sections.
Each of the individual sections can be made available with independent
Host LUNs.
Up to 1024 LUNs per controller, and 64TB per logical drive are
supported. Drives on different channels or different enclosures
can be selected to compose a logical configuration, reducing the
chance of downtime by hardware failure.
Firmware provides numerous options that help to achieve the highest
level of data availability and performance. In addition to the full-featured
RAID and Recovery functionality, it is able to manage imminent causes
of data loss, even those not directly related to RAID.
Automatic disk media scan can be carried out on a preset schedule
to prevent the situation when parity is damaged due to the block
errors across multiple drives. Even if this happens, firmware is
able to salvage most data by skipping unrepairable data blocks.
Other integrity options include:
SMART support with configurable rebuild schemes
Clone failing drive
Automatic reassignment of bad sectors
Parity regeneration, and verification on writes
Scalability
Array capacity can be expanded online by adding drives or replacing
the original drives with drives of larger capacity. Arrays can be
expanded without additional enclosures or powering down the system.
Manageability
The Java-based RAIDWatch GUI manager provides easy-to-use interfaces,
is rich in configuration options, and requires only a web browser
to remotely manage their storage over a network. Its sub-modules,
Event Monitor, and NPC allow system managers to rectify a problem
by its graphical presentations and a variety of notification methods.
Enclosure Management
The RAID enclosure or its cascaded JBOD is monitored through an
I2C bus. An added enclosure is immediately brought online and made
visible through the graphical GUI interface. On occasions like low
battery charge, UPS AC loss, fan failure, or high temperature, an
automatic cache-flush will be initiated. When enclosure or board
temperature exceeds preset thresholds, system will shut down to
protect being damaged.
